Industrial Fans: Types and Benefits

Fans are such a big part of our indoor environments that most of the time we hardly ever know they are there.

Yet without fans to cool, ventilate and circulate fresh air and remove odors, many of the spaces where we live and work would be uninhabitable due to a buildup of noxious pollutants and unwanted odors.

Industrial fans are used to provide air and gas movement in warehouses, manufacturing facilities and other industrial sites. Fans and blowers agitate air in enclosed spaces, replacing stale, contaminated air with fresh air.

Industrial fans also are frequently used for cooling and drying applications, especially on construction sites. In factories, fans reduce cool down indoor spaces and prevent stagnation.

Affordable, Efficient Air Solutions

Unlike air conditioning units, which use compressors to create chilled air, industrial fans simply move air from one place to another more cheaply and often more efficiently.

Fans are also used to remove or add moisture to the air, remove smoke and odors, and in processing applications such as removing gas fumes and in chemical labs and automotive shops.

The bottom line is that practically everybody owes their health and comfort to the daily use of industrial fans.

Classified by Size and Power

The size of industrial fans usually is relative to the volume of the environment in which they will be used. For high volume, high static pressure applications, industrial fans and blowers are classified by numbers that designate the size and construction of the fan.

The Air Movement and Control Association ha three different industrial fan classes. Generally, the higher the number, the bigger and more powerful the industrial fan will be. Smaller, portable fans that have a low number are typically used for smaller jobs such as evaporating spilled liquids or cooling smaller spaces.

Types of Industrial Fans

Within these classifications, there are different types of industrial fans.

Freestanding fans are those that don’t need to be mounted to a wall or floor. They offer a higher level of versatility because they can be moved to whatever space they are needed. This category of industrial fans includes many portable fans and blowers.

Wall and panel mounted fans are affixed onto or within walls and usually are used for ventilation. This type of industrial fan also includes exhaust fans that can remove smoke, harmful gasses and unpleasant odors through an opening in a wall, ceiling or floor.

Duct fans and blowers are used with in-line duct work, which is supported by braces or flanges along the surface or inside walls and ceilings. Ceiling ventilation fans are use specially designed flanges that allow them to be mounted within ventilation systems. These types of industrial fans are frequently used to remove harmful fumes that can buildup in indoor spaces.

Benefits of Industrial Fans

While they quietly do their jobs out of sight and out of mind, industrial fans create a healthy atmosphere by removing pollutants, contaminants, smoke, and odors. They reduce heat and humidity and provide valuable benefits to indoor environments.

When choosing an industrial fan, select the one that best benefits the environmental conditions, pressure levels and surface areas where it will be used.
