New Machine Allows for Cleaner Welding and Grinding Operations

A UK company has developed a new mobile welding fume extraction device that filters metal particulate fumes, dusts and some gases during welding and grinding applications.

The company — Extractability, a division of Weldability-Sif — says that the ProtectoXtract Mobile Welding Fume Extractor has received approval from the Institute of Occupational Health Standards.

Here’s a video that demonstrates how it works:

The machine is built on swivel casters to make it easier to maneuver. It is powered by a 100v/230v input supply and features a three meter long fully positional cantilever arm and hood. It’s designed to be used in welding bays, factory workshops and garages.

The machine has an acoustic housing feature to keep noise emissions down. It also has a four-stage filtration system with an efficiency greater than 99%, and its suction arm hose with internal joints provides air movements of 2,500 cubic meters per hour. It is suitable for use with category W3 stainless welding fumes that are less than 30% Ni+Cr.

It may be used for jobs that produce weld spatter or hot metal particles, but in that instance an optional aluminum pre-filter must be used. Other optional accessories include replacement filters spark arrestor filters, and grinding filters.
