{"id":7166,"date":"2014-12-16T15:18:01","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T21:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahrns.com\/blog\/?p=7166"},"modified":"2023-11-14T21:17:01","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T03:17:01","slug":"oregon-tech-firm-developing-type-forklift-engine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahrns.com\/blog\/material-handling\/oregon-tech-firm-developing-type-forklift-engine\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Tech Firm Developing New Type of Forklift Engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KersTech &#8212; a drive train technology firm based in Beaverton, Oregon &#8212; is developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerstech.com\/News.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new type of forklift engine<\/a> that is better suited to the vehicle&#8217;s frequent starts and stops.<\/p>\n<p>The TwinTorq engine combines electric and hydraulic torque technologies to extend operational run time. It improves battery energy efficiently and significantly extends a forklift&#8217;s driving range because each stop and start is considered a separate recovery event.<\/p>\n<p>Lester Erlston, KersTech&#8217;s CEO, said when the prototype engine is completed next year, it will be installed in a Hyster forklift and test driven at a research and test facility in Fairview, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forklift warehouse drive cycles are ideal for TwinTorq motor systems,&#8221; Erlston said. &#8220;We see tremendous opportunities for that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other possible uses include city buses, parcel delivery vans, and warehouse handling equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The TwinTorq is being developed at the Oregon Institute of Technology, in Klamath Falls and the research is funded in part by public and private grants totaling $459,000.
