Keep in mind that it doesn’t make sense to choose a premium, high performance film for a force to load type stretch film machine. Why? Because the machine isn’t capable of getting the performance value out of the stretch film. Nor does it make much sense to use a very thin film to wrap a heavy “C” load.

The least appropriate way to selecting a machine grade of stretch film is on a price per roll basis without consideration of the machine and films’ capabilities, and make up of the load. Manufacturers are further complicating price per roll comparisons by offering metric gauges and widths of rolls, and rolls of varied lengths.

The best way to select a machine grade stretch film is by testing its performance in your application. If price comparisons are to be made, make sure to compare the cost of stretch film actually used to wrap a load. This is easily done by determining the stretch film’s price per pound and then weighing the film used per load.

So we’ve covered what type of stretch film machines are available. However, there’s a couple types stretching systems that are used on stretch film machines.

There is a Force to Load system which involves the unwinding of the stretch film roll being braked and restricted in a manner, stretching the film between the stretch film roll and the rotating load. A stretch percentage of anywhere from 50% to 100% on average.

The Power Pre-Stretch variety stretches and unwinds the film between two rollers. Each roller rotates at a different rate in the film carriage prior to meeting the load. With a Power Pre-Stretch type machine the stretch percentage can be anywhere from 150% to 300% on average.

The inconsistency factor leads to damage while being loaded, in transit, and off loaded. This results in more money being lost through replacement, added freight (besides that of the original freight), or worse yet the loss of a customer.

Stretch Wrap / Stretch Film

The upside of acquiring a stretch wrap machine is efficiency. As opposed to manual wrapping, you could save up to 50% more stretch film.
