Hitachi Poised to Benefit from Romanian Building Boom

Ever since 1989, when Romanians overthrew the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu, the economy of the former Communist country has struggled find traction under democracy. Today, the Romanian construction market is undergoing a boom, as investors pour money into such projects as new roads, dams, mining, quarries, recycling and forestry projects.

Hitachi’s European division announced recently that is is ready to supply the forklifts and other heavy equipment the rapidly growing country needs for its suddenly vita construction market.

Hitachi Construction Machinery-Europe appointed Utirom Invest SRL as its new dealer. The company has set up shop just outside the Romanian capital of Bucharest with facilities that include a 13,000 square foot warehouse and office space. The company is offering a wide range of Hitachi equipment, including Zaxis-5 exacators (mini, medium and large), ZW-5 wheel loaders, rigid dump trucks and Hitachi-Sumitomo cranes, according to new reports.

“The (construction industry) is expected to grow in the coming years due to considerable investment from the government in road development and plans to expand the country’s educational infrastructure,” stated the UK website Hub-4. “Foreign direct investment in construction and real estate has also increased in recent years and will continue to drive growth.”

General manager Claudiu Barbulescu said this presents Hitachi with the perfect opportunity provide the construction equipment the country needs as it undergoes its transformation from a former Soviet satellite to a thriving democracy.
